Tailored and clean-lined, with an emphasis on classic forms and contrasting periods, Susie Johnson's signature approach emphasizes proper scale and proportion, as well as effective lighting, as opposed to an affinity for a particular scheme. "The client's vision should shape the design concept, inspiring design that reflects his or her personality and lifestyle," she says. "Whether the client's taste favors a contemporary or more traditional style, each project should exude originality and timeless appeal, in response to the requirements and wishes expressed by that particular individual." Housing an extensive library of design books that feature numerous cultures from the French Regency period and Bauhaus style, for example, Johnson is always looking to expand her horizons and understandings of different design influences. "I seek inspiration every opportunity I get," she says. "A color palette can stem from my exposure to fashion, art and even nature. Contributing factors include anything and everything within my immediate and extended environment, such as music, people and history." Regardless of her muse, Johnson seeks to ensure all of her projects maintain a well-edited composition, personalized to the homeowner's customized standards of excellence. Interior design is a highly individualized field, where the customer's goals drive the underlying concept.
Eighteenth century French decor and classical forms have had a big influences on my works. Lately, the emphasis on green building and sustainable design has also impacted my approach.
